Dynamic Universal Pickleball Ratings (DUPR)

DUPR stands for Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating. It is the most accurate and only global pickleball rating system. Players can be rated between 2.0 and 5.0 at the amateur level, regardless of age, gender, or location.

The number of points you score during the match vs the number your opponent(s) score determines the change in rating.

Yes, players are encouraged to link their DUPR accounts to their CourtReserve accounts. This will allow Catamount Pickleball to seamlessly import your scores to DUPR, which will then update your rating.

DUPR directly compares your score vs your opponent’s score in every match. They predict what percentage of the points that should have been won by a player at your level (using a massive data collection), and compare it to what actually happened. This gives them a number they can use to raise/lower your score if you did better/worse than expected.

Try to win every point in your DUPR rating matches, because they can record more than 11 points per match, and each point will count.

Any game with a difference of 1.0 between players will not count against your DUPR score. If you are a 3.0 and you partner with a 4.0, your scores, win or lose, will not adjust your rating.

The same rules apply between teams. Any game where a team has an average score of 2.5 vs a team with a score of 3.5 will not count.

Additionally, games where neither team reaches 6 points (5-2, 4-4, 3-0) will not count, but an 11-0 pickling will! When games are timed, a score of 18-5 will count!

NO, playing at your current level will improve your rating faster than any other, if we look at how DUPR works. Being successful as a 3.6 in a 3.5-4.0 group is much better than losing in a 4.0-4.5 and hurting yourself and your partner.

Playing hard and winning by a large margin will do more for your score if your opponents are at your level. Slowly building your rating also allows you to adapt to higher levels of pressure on the court, which is very useful for high-stakes tournament play.

Your ratings per match can change retroactively. DUPR goes back and updates the expected outcomes of your unrated matches once everyone has a rating, and adjusts your current level accordingly.

This is referred to as connectivity by DUPR, and a higher level of connectivity gives a player more drastic rating changes.

Half life is how quickly your rating decays, with a lower number meaning your rating will drop faster. The amount of rating matches you play within a certain time frame is what your half-life records, so playing more is encouraged.

DUPR recommends staying above a half-life of 9 or 10 to maintain your rating.

DUPR gives a provisional rating to players who are under a certain number of recorded matches, as there isn’t enough data to grant a full rating. Sometimes these provisional ratings are not indicative of your level, but please don’t be discouraged.

Your rating will continue to approach a true level as you play, somewhere between 15-20 matches or so.

DUPR provides accuracy, personal performance data, and a direct comparison to the well known pros and your friends for some motivation.

Additionally, some of the higher levels of play at Catamount Pickleball will be limited to those with matching DUPR ratings, so we encourage you to work hard, improve, and practice your skills.

No, if you are satisfied with the level of play you currently have, our 3.0 level Open Play sessions and leagues will always be available. Anytime you would like to participate in a DUPR rating session you are welcome to create an account and do so.

Some tournaments will also request a DUPR account so please keep this in mind. For any player looking to play at the 3.5 level or higher, we strongly encourage a DUPR account, as this will influence what events are available to you.

Evenly matched, similarly skilled players find that their games are more exciting, better suited for their level, and provide them with practice to hone their skills as they improve.
